Staying hydrated is essential during scorching summer heat, but excessive water intake can pose serious risks. Researchers at Maastricht University Medical Center warn that it disrupts the body's delicate balance.
The primary issue? Salt levels. Consuming large amounts of water without sufficient salty foods can dilute blood sodium to dangerously low levels. Cells then swell as they absorb excess water to seek salt, potentially constricting blood vessels.
André Leblanc, spokesperson for Maastricht University Medical Center, told the AD: "In addition to more cases of dehydration, we're seeing a rise in the opposite problem—water intoxication. These individuals often neglect to replenish salt."
