Excess Salt Kills: 2,500 Annual Heart Disease Deaths in the Netherlands

Research from the Nutrition Centre, Netherlands Heart Foundation, and Wageningen University reveals that excessive salt intake causes around 2,500 cardiovascular deaths annually in the Netherlands. This underscores salt as a major yet underrecognized public health threat.

Too much salt raises blood pressure, heightening risks for heart disease and kidney problems. The average Dutch adult consumes 9-10 grams daily, exceeding the recommended 6-gram limit. Most salt hides in processed foods like ready meals, pizzas, soups, sauces, and savory snacks—making overconsumption easy to overlook.

Reducing salt in these products by manufacturers could prevent those 2,500 deaths each year. These organizations urge food companies to clearly label salt content, empowering consumers to make informed choices.

They're also raising awareness by designating the first week of February as 'Salt Week', aligning with the global World Action on Salt and Health (WASH) initiative.
