Nosebleeds can occur due to various causes, from minor trauma to dryness, but staying calm is key. Follow these simple, evidence-based first aid steps used by medical professionals to stop the bleeding effectively.
Whether triggered by a bump or spontaneously, nosebleeds are usually not serious. The priority is controlling the blood flow promptly. Here's how.

1. Head to the bathroom
At home, the bathroom is ideal—your medicine cabinet is handy, and you can lean over the sink to avoid messes on floors or clothes. Move steadily to stay safe.
2. Pinch the nostril
Never tilt your head back, as that can lead to swallowing blood. Instead, lean forward over the sink and firmly pinch the bleeding nostril with your fingers for 10 minutes. Alternatively, insert a cotton ball or hemostatic pad to maintain pressure without constant pinching.
Apply an ice cube to the bridge of your nose—the cold constricts blood vessels and halts flow.
These steps typically stop mild nosebleeds in about 10 minutes, even in children. If bleeding persists, remain calm and seek medical help for proper evaluation and treatment.
