Over a year into the COVID-19 pandemic, innovative solutions to combat the virus deserve close attention. Leading German optics expert ZEISS has launched spectacle lenses embedded with an antimicrobial agent—a true industry first. This advanced treatment enables lenses to neutralize viruses and microbes automatically.
Since SARS-CoV-2 emerged, creative solutions have proliferated, from portable air purifiers to vehicle antivirus masks. ZEISS's DuraVision® AntiVirus Platinum UV coating stands out, proven to eliminate 99.9% of viruses and bacteria.
"Eyes serve as entry points for viruses and bacteria, and glasses—touched frequently throughout the day—can harbor microbes for hours," ZEISS explains. "To counter this, we've pioneered an anti-reflective coating infused with antimicrobial agents."

Eyeglasses are handled often and positioned centrally on the face, making them prime targets for contamination. Notably, the coronavirus can survive up to 72 hours on common frame materials like stainless steel and plastic.
Developed in partnership with the Institute of Precision Medicine at the University of Furtwangen, Germany, these lenses feature silver nanoparticles integrated directly during manufacturing, alongside anti-reflective properties—no additional application needed.
The positively charged silver ions disrupt the negatively charged cell membranes of microorganisms. ZEISS highlights silver's centuries-old reputation in medicine for its healing properties. The DuraVision® AntiVirus Platinum UV lenses are now available worldwide.
