Can Chinese Cinnamon Lower Blood Sugar in Prediabetic Individuals? Insights from Recent Research

A recent study indicates that Chinese cinnamon may help manage blood sugar levels in people with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. While promising, results from prior research have been mixed.

Not Just Any Cinnamon

The four primary types of cinnamon include Padang, Chinese cinnamon (also known as cassia), Saigon, and Ceylon. Research published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society on July 21, 2020, by Dr. Giulio Romeo at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, USA, highlights the benefits of Chinese cinnamon. Described as an inexpensive and effective option, it may slow prediabetes progression toward severe type 2 diabetes.

Over 12 weeks, researchers tracked 51 patients with elevated blood sugar levels—indicative of prediabetes. Participants received 500mg capsules of Chinese cinnamon three times daily. Those taking the supplement showed lower blood sugar levels compared to the placebo group.

Study leaders are optimistic about cinnamon's benefits when incorporated into the diet but urge caution. Excessive amounts can be harmful, so use it reasonably as a sugar or salt substitute, avoiding overuse for those with diabetes.

Mixed Evidence from Other Studies

Supporting studies include one from Nutrition and Metabolic Insights in 2012 with 18 volunteers, finding Chinese cinnamon more effective than a strict diet for blood sugar control. A 2003 Diabetes Care study of 60 participants also reported benefits from small doses.

Conversely, a 2012 NIH meta-analysis of 12 randomized trials concluded there was insufficient evidence to confirm cinnamon's effects on blood sugar.
