Google Shares Billions of Anonymized Mobility Data to Track COVID-19 and Containment Effectiveness

Google, the tech giant, has shared aggregated mobility data with public health authorities in over 130 countries to monitor COVID-19 trends and evaluate lockdown measures by analyzing changes in visits to key locations.

Billions of Aggregated User Insights

Amid debates on using mobile tracking to combat the pandemic, eight major European telecom operators pledged to share anonymized geolocation data in compliance with GDPR privacy standards.

On April 3, 2020, Google announced its contribution via the COVID-19 Community Mobility Reports platform, sharing insights from billions of Android users. Derived from Google Maps location history, this data is aggregated and anonymized before public release. Reports covering 131 countries are available as downloadable PDFs.

Insights for France

France's 12-page report (available in English PDF) details significant mobility reductions during lockdown: 88% drop at retail and recreation spots, 87% at transit stations, 82% in parks, 72% at grocery stores and pharmacies, and 56% at workplaces. National trends are broken down by region for deeper analysis.

These reports help public health officials and communities assess adherence to social distancing guidelines. Google emphasizes they are not for medical diagnosis, treatment, or individual travel advice. Once the pandemic subsides, the platform and related activities will cease.
