Embarking on your first pregnancy launches an exciting adventure into uncharted territory. Preparing as a couple sparks unexpected questions. Living near Lyon, Laurence (35) and Florian (37)—"L" and "F" in this interview—welcomed sons Antoine (5) and Oscar (2.5). Laurence enjoyed two smooth, low-risk pregnancies. They share their real experiences through this parental testimonial, offering insights from both mom and dad.
When you learned you were expecting, what were your first questions?
Laurence (L): Early in pregnancy, questions don't hit all at once. Ours focused on readiness: Are we prepared? Can we raise and educate a child? We also tackled practicalities like registering at the maternity ward and booking a gynecologist appointment. My first pregnancy went smoothly, so I stayed relatively calm.
Florian (F): We weren't anxious parents. We knew each other well, felt mature, and trusted our abilities. We wondered about bodily changes during pregnancy, but admin tasks like gynecologist visits felt straightforward—informative milestones, like learning the baby's sex or weight.
L and F: Meanwhile, we prepped the home: nursery, bathroom, kitchen—everything practical and within reach for the baby.
How did you find answers?
L: My gynecologist was my top advisor. Friends with recent experience offered great tips too—procedures evolve, so recent parents were key. Parents from my generation were too far removed. Ultimately, trust specialists like GPs or gynecologists.
F: Friends guided our maternity choice, recommending based on their positive experiences.
What were your first changes upon learning of the pregnancy?
L: I focused on diet first: no alcohol, unpasteurized cheese, or raw fish. (I never smoked.) I avoided 'eating for two' but indulged healthy cravings with fresh snacks and safe cheese alternatives. I checked labels for pasteurization and ramped up food hygiene, like thoroughly washing produce.
On health, I took my gynecologist-prescribed vitamins and used rich body milk to prevent stretch marks. For exercise, I stuck to safe activities like stepping, Pilates, and yoga—avoiding risks like horseback riding. I consulted my doctor if unsure. Florian supported me fully.
What about pets?
L: We have none, but I steered clear of others' cats due to toxoplasmosis. Monthly blood tests monitored for issues.
How did you handle physical and physiological changes?
L: I loved my pregnancy. Weight gain was mostly belly—no major swelling or feeling 'huge,' just occasional hot flashes. We photographed my growing bump; I felt proud as a mom-to-be! Hormonal shifts brought some acne and tired hair, but nothing severe. I stayed feminine and confident.
Did you attend medical visits together?
L and F: Not all, but key ones like the first ultrasound and 3-month gender scan—emotional, shared moments. Routine checks (e.g., heartbeat) were quick and didn't need both of us. Our pregnancies were healthy and positive.
What birth preparation did you choose?
F: We picked classic birth preparation sessions with a midwife at her home, in a group. Sophrology or yoga didn't suit us; it matches your lifestyle. It reassured us, explained labor, taught breathing, and let us connect with other couples.
L: Exactly—a practical guide for D-Day. For my first, we added haptonomy: connecting with the baby via touch, involving dad early. Practice at home for that first family bond.
F: Haptonomy made me more involved.
L: I recommend it! It's intimate and powerful.
Looking back, any changes?
F: We'd repeat haptonomy for the second—it was that good.
L: Prep emphasizes prevention, but feelings drive much of it. With experience, you're calmer. Pregnancy preparation adapts to your journey.
F: No unnecessary stress.
L: Of course, it varies by pregnancy.
