Sun Exposure Linked to Eye Freckles: Key Findings from Vision Research

Vision scientists have uncovered a strong link between sun exposure and eye freckles—those dark spots on the iris. In a detailed study, these benign spots were more common in people with higher lifetime sunlight exposure. While not cancerous, they can signal risks for sun-induced conditions like cataracts or macular degeneration.

The research examined eyes from over 600 participants, paired with questionnaires on sun exposure history and sunscreen use. Results showed eye freckles correlate with advancing age, total sunburns, and severe cases causing blisters. Individuals with darker irises or consistent protection—like sunscreen or clothing—faced lower risks.

Notably, freckles clustered on the lower outer (temporal) iris, away from the nose. Researchers attribute this to natural shielding by the eyebrow and nose, reducing UV exposure on upper and inner areas.
