Daily Aspirin Use Linked to Doubled Risk of Macular Degeneration

Do you take aspirin daily? Recent research suggests it may heighten your risk of macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss in older adults.

Aspirin is renowned for relieving pain, reducing fever, and fighting inflammation—a near-miracle drug for many. However, long-term use can bring side effects, from stomach issues to hearing loss. A study by Dutch ophthalmology professor Paulus de Jong, published in the journal Ophthalmology, reveals that daily aspirin use among seniors doubles the risk of macular degeneration.

Understanding Macular Degeneration
This condition, also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), damages the macula—the central part of the retina responsible for sharp vision. It leads to blurred or lost central vision.

Typically, about 2 in 100 people develop macular degeneration. For daily aspirin users, that risk is twice as high.

Positive Habits for Eye Health
Fortunately, some daily habits offer benefits. For instance, research shows moderate coffee consumption may help reduce depression risk.
