Women Experience More Stress from Major Life Events Than Men, Study Reveals

A recent study of over 2,000 participants uncovers a notable gender gap in stress responses, with women reporting significantly higher stress levels from key life events—including the death of a loved one, serious illness, and even losing a smartphone. For every event evaluated, women consistently rated stress higher than men. The largest disparity emerged with the threat of terrorism, while the smallest difference was observed before the birth of a first child.

Stress from certain events tends to intensify with age, particularly for enduring challenges like chronic illness or imprisonment. Notable exceptions include smartphone loss, which peaks among younger generations facing unique digital dependencies, and the arrival of a first child, rated most stressful by those aged 25-34.
