Make your own sparkling water and soda from tap water with the Soda Stream

Make your own sparkling water or make soft drinks with the Soda Stream? I can no longer imagine this appliance out of our kitchen. We rarely buy soft drinks in the store. Not only because the amount of sugars in those drinks is bizarre, but also because we are now simply a lot cheaper by making sparkling water from tap water.

Soda Stream with sparkling water provides healthier choices

With a teenager in the house you understand that - if we were to let him choose - the bottles of soft drink would not be available. Yet I notice that we are now approaching a point where the choices become easier for him too. We have been making our own sparkling water a lot since we got the Soda Stream at home. Nowadays it is common to drink coffee, tea, tap water or sparkling water.

Tap water instead of bottled spring water

The water in the Netherlands is of such quality that we can drink it here with ease. But if I just drink tap water, coffee and tea during the day, then I like to drink sparkling water in the evening. That gives just that little bit extra.

Even when there are visitors, or even on a birthday, we rarely have soft drinks in the house. We have a number of Soda Stream syrups in our cupboard and if we want to drink something other than just sparkling water, we add a taste. This is how adolescents feel about their soft drink content, and we know that it is a lot healthier, because it contains much less flavor than it says on the packaging 😉 .

What exactly is Soda Stream?

For those who don't know, a short explanation about the Soda Stream. Soda Stream is a device that turns tap water into sparkling water in no time at all. The device contains a refillable gas bottle with carbon dioxide (CO2), which you can easily place and/or replace yourself. You fill the supplied PET bottle with tap water, place it in the device and you have sparkling water at the touch of a button.

You decide how much carbon dioxide you want in your sparkling water. With the Soda Stream that we have, you can do this by choosing which button you will use to fill the bottle of sparkling water. With the push of a button you have the amount of carbon dioxide that you like best. Sometimes I have filled a bottle with a Marie Henriette sparkling water with it, and other times I opt for more carbon dioxide and make a bottle of spa red.

How much does sparkling water cost with the Soda Stream?

I'm going to do a little math on it. Suppose you drink 5 liters of sparkling water in a week. That is then 260 liters per year and 520 liters every 2 years.

If you are going to make sparkling water with a Soda Stream, the costs are as follows:

That's quite a difference, isn't it? In fact… if you use the Soda Stream for more than 2 years (which is of course the case, it has been here for years without any problems), the costs will only decrease because the purchase price can be divided over several years / liters of sparkling water become.

Soda Stream Spirit One Touch

The Soda Stream model that I bought a few years ago still meets our needs, but a number of new models have already been released. Such as, for example, the Soda Stream Spirit One Touch. I personally think it's less handsome than our oldie, but that doesn't make it any less good.

The Soda Stream Spirit One Touch also has 3 buttons, for soft sparkling, medium sparkling and plenty of sparkling water.

To attach the CO2 bottle, remove the cover at the back by lightly pressing the 3 dots on top. It's not easy. You place the oxygen gas bottle and close the hood again.

The Soda Stream in use

Using the Soda Stream is easy, more information about the Soda Stream can be found here. The moment you have the oxygen gas bottle in it, you can fill the PET bottle with water. The bottle indicates where to fill it with normal tap water. Do not put in more water than the line indicates, otherwise you have a chance that it will come over when adding the bubbles.

You place the PET bottle in the holder by holding it diagonally underneath and then clicking it up. The snap-lock system of the Soda Stream ensures that the bottle is now 'tight'. Press one of the buttons to add the bubbles and your sparkling sparkling water is ready.

Soda Stream flavours

Would you rather not only drink sparkling water, but also a taste in your bubbles, Soda Stream also offers a solution.

Classic Soda Stream flavours

You will find soft drink flavors ranging from Ice Tea to Grapefruit flavour and from Cola to Lemon or Tonic taste. Do you prefer a taste without sugars? Then that is also possible, the diet flavors Orange , Lemon Lime and Diet Coke are the low-calorie variants.

Mocktail flavours

In addition to the classic flavors, you can now also make an alcohol-free cocktail with the sparkling water. Making the mocktails Pink Mojito , Bahamas Pina Colada and Italian Shorts do exactly what they promise. They give a delicious twist to your sparkling water that resembles the original cocktail variants. A great way to enjoy a mocktail on your own terrace in the summer.

Fruitdrops

You can make sparkling water with a light taste with the fruit drops from Soda Stream. The Lemon drops , Raspberry drops and Orange drops give a light taste experience like, for example, a normal carafe with water and some fruit. But then nice with bubbles.

Sustainable and environmentally friendly

The device has already proven that the Soda Stream is sustainable. We have been using it with great pleasure and without complaints for 2.5 years. It is also environmentally friendly, partly because you no longer have to buy bottles of soft drinks. By making sparkling water in this way you help to reduce the enormous plastic waste mountain. So a good idea!
