Low-carbohydrate diet finally produces results, Linda loses weight

Linda Scheeringa-Ridder, 40, has been married to Benjamin for 18 years and is mom to a 15-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter. As a pedagogical employee at a daycare in Groningen, she loves her career. Plagued by excess weight lifelong, Linda shares her decades-long battle and how low-carb eating helped her drop 44.5 kilos after exhausting other options.

My weight struggles began early. My mother recounts I was heavy at birth, and at check-ups, it was always discussed. I don't recall, but by primary school, being overweight stood out.

I noticed I was bigger than friends and couldn't wear the cute clothes they did. High school worsened it—canteen snacks piled on pounds. As the saying goes, every pound enters through the mouth.

After primary school

I wasn't bullied and kept friends, so it felt okay. At MBO, I met my future husband. My weight never bothered him; he loves me as I am, which felt amazing.

I finished school, started working, we married, and ate freely—gaining more weight.

Getting pregnant if you are overweight

Pregnant with our first at 121 kilos, I gained 8 more. Post-C-section, the gynecologist told my husband no more pregnancies without dieting—he shared later, hitting me hard. It was my wake-up call.

Three years on, pregnant again at 121 kilos, I gained 9. When my daughter turned one, I knew change was urgent. Time for low-carb weight loss.

What have I tried to lose weight?

I tried home-cooked healthier meals, no snacks. But post-birthday, old habits returned.

Weight Watchers

With a friend at Weight Watchers, from 130 to 107 kilos in a year—progress! But saving points for weekend binges on chocolate and cookies derailed me. Quitting brought all weight back; habits unchanged.

Shakes

Shakes from stores and consultants like Cambridge? Unpalatable, like wet cardboard. I craved family meals, making it unsustainable.

A stomach operation?

Desperate, GP-referred for gastric surgery in Leeuwarden. Seeing tube-fed patients and risks shocked me—off the table on the drive home.

The fear of dying from being overweight

I resigned to it until family vacation 2016. Work stress peaked; fearing heart issues from weight, I barely ate. Home, I'd lost some—not eating does that. Time to flip the switch.

I won't die young; it's my choice. Started yogurt-muesli breakfasts, sandwiches lunch, normal dinner. It worked!

Stimulated by low-carbohydrate success stories

Sister-in-law raved about low-carb plates. Skeptical bread lover, but colleague shared Facebook groups of real low-carb success stories. Online research convinced me to try.

Good food and withdrawal symptoms

Surprise: I loved it! Occasional low-carb bakery rolls for kids' soccer. Strict first month: sugar withdrawal—fatigue, headaches, lethargy. Then energy surged! Kilos melted. Plateaus test you, but newfound vitality wins. I get cold, but for effortless weight loss via eating smarter? Low-carb is gold.

A change in the way you eat

44.5 kilos gone since summer 2016 via low-carb. My body thrives sugar-free—no turning back. Sustainable lifestyles fit individually; explore what works for lasting success!
