Conducted by four American researchers, this investigation analyzed the behaviors of more than 3,000 cat owners and their pets. The results showed consistent alignment between human personalities and those of their cats.
The team focused on the "Big Five" personality traits widely recognized in psychology: openness to new experiences, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. These dimensions shape individual personalities to varying degrees.
Owners scoring high in neuroticism were more likely to have cats exhibiting behavioral issues. Meanwhile, cats of extraverted owners tended to be more outgoing, enjoying frequent outdoor adventures. The similarities were remarkably consistent.
Researchers suggest this resemblance stems from a parent-child-like bond, where dominant traits are passed on through interaction. Alternatively, owners might naturally select cats that match their own temperaments—extraverts choosing lively kittens, introverts opting for calmer ones.
