Santé Editors Tackle the National Sugar Challenge: Sugar Lurks in Almost Everything

From June 7 to 13, the Diabetes Fund hosts the National Sugar Challenge: a week of food and drinks free from added sugars. As health experts at Santé magazine, our editorial team is stepping up to the plate.

Tightening the Reins

Editor-in-Chief Annalot (44): "I believe my sugar intake is manageable. I rarely indulge in sweets, but beverages are my downfall. Years ago, I minimized added sugars and reaped the benefits—sustained energy and no more afternoon slumps. Label-checking was revelatory: sugar hides in jars of grilled asparagus or pesto. I've since learned to select low-sugar brands. The challenge is a perfect chance to sharpen my habits again, though I'm hesitant to scrutinize every label once more. It's easy to look the other way."

Unseen Sources

Web Editor Maike (27): "I avoid pre-made sauces, take my coffee and tea black, and keep sweets out of the house. Yet added sugars sneak in via my morning veggie yogurt, afternoon snacks (for convenience), and weekend juices. Despite feeling healthy, my intake surprises me. I'm excited for the challenge—a week sans added sugars. What appeals most? Simplicity. Like Annalot, label-checking daunts me, but it's far from impossible."
