5 Common Mountain Biking Mistakes to Avoid for Safer, Smoother Rides

Mountain biking delivers a full-body workout and an unbeatable adrenaline rush. As seasoned riders know, steering clear of these five pitfalls ensures safer, more enjoyable trails.

  1. Ride without padded cycling shorts: Saddle sores are inevitable and can ruin your day.
  2. Push too fast too soon: Build speed gradually—start slow to master control and technique.
  3. Tackle steep slopes in your heaviest gear: Shift to an easier gear ahead of time for smoother pedaling.
  4. Lean too far forward on descents: Instead, stand lightly on the pedals, straighten your arms, and shift your weight back for stability.
  5. Go over the handlebars: Avoid this by braking evenly with both front and rear brakes while using a pumping motion.
