The respiratory system comprises four main components: the mouth, nose, trachea (windpipe), and lungs. The trachea connects to the lungs via branching bronchi, channeling inhaled air deep into the lung tissue for optimal oxygenation.
Every four seconds, your lungs supply fresh oxygen to fuel your body, supporting organ health and overall vitality. That's approximately 20,000 breaths per day—or 8 million per year. Protected by layers of mucous membrane, lungs trap inhaled particles and pollutants. Coughing up phlegm clears these irritants; swallowing it harmlessly excretes them via the digestive tract, never re-entering the lungs.
Ever felt food 'go down the wrong way'? That's it entering one of the main bronchi at the trachea's base, which further branch to aerate the lungs—a common but momentary irritation.
