Dry Hands from Frequent Washing Affect 65% of Dutch – Yet Many Do Nothing

With frequent hand washing and sanitizer use, dry hands are now a common issue for most Dutch people. Unfortunately, many aren't taking steps to address it, which isn't the best approach.

No less than 65% of Dutch adults report dry skin from frequent hand washing. Yet, one in three neglects skin care, even though 30% experience cracks.

This comes from a Motivaction survey of over 1,000 adults aged 18-80, commissioned by the Skin Fund.

Skin Problems on the Rise

On average, hand washing has increased fourfold since the COVID-19 crisis. For nearly half of Dutch people, it causes minor skin issues; for 18%, significant problems; and for 5%, severe ones.

Common complaints include dry skin, irritation, cracking, and rashes.

Prevent Worsening Skin Issues

With three in ten Dutch ignoring these symptoms, the Skin Fund urges action to avoid escalation. Key recommendations include:

  • Washing with cold or lukewarm water, avoiding hot water.
  • Applying a rich moisturizing cream immediately after washing – thicker is better. Apply extra before bed for overnight repair.
  • Consulting a GP for serious symptoms.
