Landmark Study Links Fresh Fruit Juice to Increased Cancer Risk

This marks the first study to specifically examine fresh fruit juices. Researchers concluded that fruit juice consumption may elevate cancer risk.

Over 100,000 French adults were tracked for five years. During this period, 2,200 developed cancer, including 693 breast cancer cases, reports Telegraaf.nl.

Sugar-Rich Drinks

"This is the first study focused on fruit juices," says Professor Ellen Kampman of Wageningen University. "We've long known sugary drinks raise cancer risk. The World Cancer Research Fund's largest review on diet, lifestyle, and cancer advises limiting added sugars. Now, fresh juices are under scrutiny."

"High-sugar drinks contribute excess calories, leading to obesity—a known cancer risk factor," Kampman explains.

Water as the Best Choice

The findings don't change core advice, but Kampman urges moderation. "Opt for water or unsweetened beverages. Skip large amounts of fresh apple or orange juice."
