Mirena IUD Recall: Verify Placement if Inserted After October 27

A batch of Mirena intrauterine devices (IUDs) has been recalled due to potential safety concerns.

A manufacturing error in the introducer sheath could result in the IUD being placed too high or too low in the uterus. In some cases, this may even cause uterine damage. Although only up to 200 devices are directly impacted, the entire batch of 76,000 IUDs—lot number TU01DCZ—has been recalled as a precaution.

Did you have a Mirena IUD inserted on or after October 27?

  1. If no verification ultrasound was done, contact your doctor promptly. A follow-up ultrasound is recommended to confirm proper placement.
  2. Women with an unused Mirena IUD bearing lot number TU01DCZ should return it to the pharmacy.
  3. No additional risk applies to those who had a Mirena IUD placed on or after October 27 with a confirmatory ultrasound.
