Ilse: The first half of January 2016 has flown by, and most New Year's resolutions have already crumbled. I steer clear of the word 'resolutions'—it's just another way of saying 'I'd like to try, but who knows if I will.' On January 2, 2015, I launched my weight loss battle with a solid plan. It wasn't a resolution; it was a firm goal. Here are my tips to turn your intentions into unstoppable goals.
Working Without Direction is a Recipe for Failure Saying 'I want to lose weight' is too vague. What are your real chances of success? Clearly define how much weight to lose, why, how you'll feel afterward, and your timeline—then share it with your support network.
Formulate SMART Goals Thinking through your goal also reveals your action plan—wishing alone won't cut it. Use the SMART framework: Specific, Measurable, Acceptable, Realistic, and Time-bound.
Specific
Make it clear and concrete. Swap 'I want to lose weight' for 'I want to lose 15 kilos.' For fitness, say 'I want to run 5 kilometers nonstop.'
Measurable
Track progress precisely. If you're 85kg aiming for 70kg, success is obvious. Specifying 'run 5km' makes it measurable too.
Acceptable
Ensure it's feasible for you and your circle. Planning three workouts weekly? Fit it into your schedule—ask a neighbor for childcare, exercise during school hours, or get your partner's support. Where there's a will, there's a way. If not, adjust to twice weekly plus weekend activity.
Realistic
Set achievable challenges—not impossibly high, not too easy. Skip the marathon; master 5km first! ;-)
Time-bound
Add start and end dates, especially for short-term goals. Deadlines keep you accountable.
In summary, craft SMART goals, print them, and read aloud daily. Phrase positively—ditch 'I don't want to be overweight.' Focus wins the day!
