Unlike many childhood allergies, peanut allergies often persist into adulthood. But new hope is emerging: researchers at University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht are testing an innovative peanut patch designed to desensitize patients.
What is the peanut patch?
This discreet patch delivers peanut extract through the skin when applied daily to the upper arm. Over time, it gradually acclimates the immune system to peanuts, reducing or potentially eliminating allergic reactions by retraining the body's response to the allergen.
Market availability: 2020 at the earliest
The patch is undergoing rigorous clinical trials. Early findings are encouraging—after about a year of daily use, many participants reported significant symptom relief. Successful trials could bring it to market as early as 2020.
