Vitamin D Supplements May Relieve Menstrual Pain: Evidence from University of Messina Study

Suffering from painful periods? Research from the University of Messina in Italy suggests that vitamin D supplements can provide significant relief.

According to the researchers, vitamin D improves comfort levels and helps reduce reliance on painkillers. The study involved 40 women aged 18 to 40, all experiencing dysmenorrhea (painful periods). Many also reported associated symptoms like sleep disturbances, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

The protocol was straightforward: participants took a single pill five days before their menstrual cycle began. Over two months, the vitamin D group showed notable reductions in pain compared to the placebo group. They also used significantly fewer painkillers.

Expert Note
One caveat: the vitamin D dose used was very high. Women should not self-medicate en masse against menstrual pain without guidance. Optimal dosing and frequency remain unclear, and long-term effects require further investigation.
