While 80% of people in the Netherlands recognize melanoma as the most dangerous form of skin cancer, awareness drops sharply for other types. As dermatology experts emphasize, knowledge is key to early detection and prevention.
Take basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the most common skin cancer—over six times more prevalent than melanoma. Yet, only 42% of Dutch people are familiar with it, according to recent surveys.
BCC often presents as a slow-growing, pink, skin-colored, or light brown bump on the skin, sometimes featuring visible small blood vessels. It's highly treatable with excellent outcomes, though ongoing monitoring for a few years is standard practice for safety.
