Thousands of Dutch women are seeking a controversial non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) abroad. This blood test screens for Down syndrome and other chromosomal conditions, offering a safer alternative to traditional methods.
Not yet approved in the Netherlands, NIPT helps women avoid amniocentesis, which carries a small risk of miscarriage. As trusted prenatal screening experts note, its high accuracy makes it a game-changer for expectant mothers prioritizing safety.
Belgium is a top destination, with Het Laatste Nieuws reporting that 4,470 Dutch pregnant women undergo NIPT there each year. Demand remains lower in the Netherlands, partly due to cultural factors: Dutch couples are less likely to choose abortion following positive results.
