Michigan State Study: Sex in Later Life Benefits Older Women More Than Men

Michigan State University researchers uncovered a striking insight: sexual activity is healthier for older women than for older men.

This finding emerged from a longitudinal study launched in 2005 with participants aged 57 to 85. They completed detailed questionnaires on health and lifestyle at baseline and five years later.

The results surprised the team. Men engaging in sex weekly or more frequently showed higher rates of cardiovascular disease than those with less or no activity—with risks rising alongside greater enjoyment.

For women, however, sex posed no such cardiovascular risks. A fulfilling sex life even correlated with better overall health outcomes.
