Sore, Lumpy Breasts? It Might Be Mastopathy, a Common Benign Condition – GP Insights

Feeling lumps in your breasts? Don't panic— it could be mastopathy, a harmless condition affecting many women. Mastopathy refers to a range of benign breast issues.

General practitioner Ingrid Kuiper explains: "Almost one in eight women will develop breast cancer, but mastopathy is even more common. Symptoms include tense, painful breasts with lumps—typically cysts (fluid-filled sacs) or fibroadenomas (connective tissue nodules). Nipple discharge may occur too. It's often hormone-driven, worsening before menstruation and easing afterward."

Though benign, mastopathy can cause anxiety since it may coexist with breast cancer, risking misdiagnosis of a malignant lump as a cyst. Self-exams are crucial for early detection.

Key signs to watch for:
Malignant lumps stay the same size through your cycle, unlike benign ones. Cysts and fibroadenomas feel round like marbles and move freely, while cancerous ones often adhere to surrounding tissue. Mastopathy lumps are usually painful; breast cancer typically isn't at first.

For confirmation, request a mammogram post-menstruation when breasts are less tender, or an ultrasound for cysts. Surgery isn't ideal for widespread mastopathy—nodules can recur after removal or drainage. The contraceptive pill often helps regulate hormones. Opt for a supportive, wire-free sports bra, and try a cold compress for pain relief.

Always consult your doctor if concerned.
