Almost everyone experiences cold sores occasionally, but for some, they recur frequently and intensely. Researchers at the University of Utah have identified a hereditary component behind severe, recurrent outbreaks.
The primary cause is the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), which often flares up during harsh weather, extreme cold, weakened immunity, or intense sun exposure. This virus triggers painful blisters on or around the lips that typically heal in 7-10 days. Over 90% of people carry HSV-1, yet only about one in three experiences regular outbreaks.
Breakthrough in genetic research
These U.S. scientists pinpointed a specific gene, C21orf91, that influences susceptibility to the virus by 21%. Environmental triggers like stress further elevate the risk.

How to manage outbreaks?
No over-the-counter products fully prevent cold sores, but antiviral creams and patches can significantly reduce discomfort and speed healing. Visit a pharmacy for these options. If blisters persist beyond two weeks, consult a doctor promptly.
