Dutch Hospital Stays Decline 4.5% in 2010, Averaging 3.17 Days per Patient

Patients in Dutch hospitals spent less time admitted in 2010 compared to 2009, according to healthcare consultancy Coppa.

The average length of stay dropped 4.5% to 3.17 days per patient. Specialties with the largest reductions included rheumatology, geriatrics, dermatology, neurology, surgery, and pulmonary medicine.

Bed Surplus
Shorter stays confirm that Dutch hospitals have sufficient beds available. Coppa's analysis shows nationwide overcapacity of 12%, or more than 5,000 beds.
