Research from the esteemed Mayo Clinic challenges the long-held belief that adults only enlarge existing fat cells when gaining weight. Scientists have discovered that new fat cells can form even later in life.
In a controlled study, 28 lean volunteers consumed a high-calorie diet heavy in chocolate, milkshakes, and energy drinks. Results revealed that abdominal fat cells simply stretched, while new fat cells developed in the thighs.
This breakthrough may explain why stubborn belly fat is strongly linked to serious health issues like diabetes and heart disease.
