Antibiotics for Bladder Infections Remain Effective in the Netherlands

Over the past five years, bacteria causing cystitis have grown increasingly resistant to antibiotics worldwide. Fortunately, not in the Netherlands. Research by Nivel and Maastricht University Medical Center reveals that Dutch general practitioners faithfully follow treatment guidelines for bladder infections.

To prevent resistance in Escherichia coli bacteria to antibiotics, researchers emphasize that doctors must continue adhering to these guidelines. Patients should closely follow GP instructions and always complete the full antibiotic course, even if symptoms resolve early.

This is especially good news for Dutch women, who suffer urinary tract infections more than five times as often as men.
