Women who frequently wear high heels and stilettos during their younger years face a higher risk of developing arthritis—an inflammation of the joints—later in life. This connection is backed by recent U.S. research.
The research team surveyed 1,400 men and 1,900 women about their foot problems and typical shoe choices. Findings showed a strong association between poor footwear decisions and arthritis in women.
High heels, sandals, and flip-flops emerged as key contributors to long-term foot issues, while sports shoes proved the healthiest option for feet. Men face minimal risk, with only 2% opting for unhealthy shoes.
To counter these effects, researchers advise young women to incorporate daily stretching exercises, even if high heels remain a staple.
