Cervical Collar Proven Most Effective for Neck Hernia Pain Relief, Neurologist s Study Shows

Neurologist Barbara Kuijper's research demonstrates that a cervical collar is the most effective non-surgical method for managing neck hernia symptoms.

Although neck hernias often resolve spontaneously, the pain can be debilitating. The combination of a cervical collar, rest, and physiotherapy delivers rapid relief. Among these approaches, the cervical collar stands out as most effective, while physiotherapy alone also speeds pain reduction, per the study.

Kuijper evaluated three non-surgical treatments in over 200 patients with recent neck hernias. By six months, group differences had vanished, with most reporting little or no pain.

This work was conducted with Professors Marianne de Visser (Neuromuscular Diseases) and Frans Nollet (Rehabilitation) at Amsterdam's Academic Medical Center (AMC).
