Many commercial lip balms, including popular brands like Labello that I've used for years, can contain synthetic ingredients that may pose health risks since they're applied directly to the lips and easily ingested.
Switch to this simple, 100% natural lip balm recipe—free from harmful additives, incredibly moisturizing, and budget-friendly. I'll share two versions: a clear one and a customizable colored option.
Based on my experience crafting natural skincare at home, your lips will thank you for this nourishing alternative. Here's the recipe:
- 1 teaspoon beeswax pellets
- 1 teaspoon shea butter or cocoa butter
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil
These natural ingredients create a smooth, protective balm that's safe for lips and skin—even if swallowed. Source shea butter from organic stores or online retailers.
For a tinted version, add these optional colorants:
- Red tint: Pinch of beetroot powder or 1 drop natural red food coloring (use sparingly).
- Brown tint: 1/4 teaspoon organic cocoa powder, pinch of cinnamon, or turmeric.
- Matte finish: 1/4 teaspoon green clay (pair with color to avoid residue).
- Scent: 1 drop essential oil (optional).
1. Combine beeswax pellets, shea (or cocoa) butter, and coconut oil in an uncovered glass jar.
2. Place the jar in a saucepan with simmering water; the small quantities melt quickly.
3. Remove from heat once fully melted.
4. (Optional) Stir in color or scent ingredients.
5. While still liquid, use a dropper to fill empty lip balm tubes—leave space at the top as it expands when cooling.
Note: Reuse a dropper from an old tincture bottle to save money.
6. Cool for at least 30 minutes.
7. Store in a cool spot (under 25°C/77°F) to prevent softening.
Your homemade 100% natural lip balm is ready—gentle, hydrating, and effective against chapping. This DIY beats commercial options loaded with potential endocrine disruptors, leaving lips plump and healthy all winter.
For the shade in my photos: 1/8 tsp beetroot powder, 1/4 tsp cocoa powder, 1/8 tsp green clay, and 1/8 tsp cinnamon, plus peppermint essential oil. Adjust cocoa for deeper tones. Apply honey on lips for extra gloss.
