I've been a devoted fan of The Body Shop lip balm, powering through four tubes in just a month and a half. But one major drawback persists: the ingredients aren't truly natural.
Don't take my word for it—check the "Ingredients" section on their product page. It's unappealing, especially since lip balm often gets ingested.

Plus, at €55 for 100ml, it's outrageously expensive. That's why I've ditched store-bought options for this foolproof homemade version—simple to make with pure, natural ingredients.
As someone who's tested countless balms, this one stands out: it deeply moisturizes and shields chapped lips through winter, outperforming commercial products in quality and affordability.
Ready to craft your own? Follow along.
- 30 ml coconut oil

- 30 g organic beeswax

- 30 g organic cocoa butter

- 2 vitamin E capsules

- 30 g glass jars
- Optional: a few drops of lavender or vanilla essential oil
These amounts yield three 30 g jars for a firm balm. Scale as needed.

A double boiler (bain-marie) gently melts ingredients without direct heat. No special pan? Rest a heatproof metal or glass bowl over a small saucepan.
Fill the bottom pot with water so it simmers without touching the bowl. Ensure no steam escapes underneath to keep condensation out of your balm.

Melt on low heat: beeswax first, then coconut oil, and cocoa butter last—it scorches easily.
Pierce and squeeze 2 vitamin E capsules into the mix for natural preservation and skin benefits.
Stir in 10 drops of lavender or vanilla essential oil. I love vanilla's warmth, but start light to suit your taste.

Remove from heat and pour the liquid into 30 g glass jars. Glass is ideal—reusable and zero waste.

Cool to room temperature undisturbed for a smooth, professional finish.

Your beautiful, natural balms are ready! Apply liberally—these hydrate without stickiness, unlike many store brands.
Allergies or preferences? Swap easily:
- Shea butter for cocoa butter
- Sweet almond, jojoba, or grapeseed oil for coconut oil
These tweaks may soften texture or alter scent (cocoa butter adds a chocolatey note). Experiment once comfortable with the base.
- Wipe the bowl with a paper towel post-pouring for easy cleanup. Never rinse down the drain to avoid clogs.
- For creamier balm, add 30 ml extra coconut oil. If too firm, remelt with more oil. This firmer version suits my active lifestyle perfectly.
