Meathead Movers: Free Relocation Services for Domestic Violence Survivors Since 1997

Leaving an abusive relationship is one of the hardest decisions a person can make.

Yet for survivors of domestic violence, the added stress of packing and moving—often under urgent and dangerous circumstances—can seem insurmountable.

Thankfully, hundreds of women (and men) have Aaron and Evan Steed to thank for stepping in during their time of need.

The brothers own Meathead Movers, a U.S.-based moving company that provides free relocation services to anyone escaping domestic abuse.

Founded in 1997 by the then-athletic college students, Meathead Movers started as a side hustle charging under $20 plus a pizza per job.

As the business grew, the Steeds began receiving desperate calls from abuse survivors with limited resources, needing to flee before their partners returned.

The brothers always rushed to help, loading boxes without accepting payment.

In 2000, a close call during a move—when an abusive husband returned unexpectedly—prompted vital changes to protect both clients and crew.

Meathead Movers partnered with local domestic violence shelters to vet requests, provide support like restraining orders, and ensure safety.

“The shelters conduct thorough assessments, offer counseling, secure legal protections, or involve police as needed,” explains Aaron Steed, company president.

Beth Raub, director of a partnering shelter, notes that a shelter representative is always on-site during moves to “enforce the law if situations escalate.”

Since then, Meathead Movers has expanded across Santa Barbara, Ventura, Orange, Los Angeles, and San Diego counties.

Each new branch identifies and collaborates with a local shelter right away.

“This is a service we’re passionate about,” Aaron shares in a recent interview. “These moves feel deeply personal, instilling pride in our team and aligning with our core mission.”

The program welcomes all domestic violence victims, regardless of gender.

Recently, Meathead Movers launched the #MoveToEndDV campaign, encouraging businesses to get creative in supporting survivors—through free services, partnerships, and more.

The goal: Spark 100 new initiatives, building a community of shared values.

Early commitments include free haircuts from stylists, rental assistance from realtors, and legal aid.

“We’re thrilled,” says Aaron. “It adds purpose and passion to our work—and if we inspire others, even better.”
