Whether occasional or recurring, muscle cramps strike unexpectedly—during workouts, at night, or anytime. They're painful and disruptive, but understanding their cause empowers you to eliminate them effectively.

A cramp is an involuntary, sustained muscle contraction. Muscles consist of fibers that shorten via calcium ions to create contraction. Normally, sodium and magnesium ions facilitate calcium's exit, allowing relaxation.
However, excessive sweating depletes sodium (a key mineral salt in perspiration), preventing relaxation and triggering cramps. Magnesium deficiency has the same effect.
The key is maintaining adequate sodium and magnesium levels.
1. Boost Sodium: Found in table salt. Combat deficiency by mixing half a teaspoon of salt into one liter of water and drinking it.
2. Replenish Magnesium: Abundant in bananas, chocolate, and certain mineral waters—choose these reliable sources.
