BioNTech CEO Ugur Sahin: SARS-CoV-2 Likely to Persist for the Next Decade

BioNTech CEO Ugur Sahin recently shared expert insights on SARS-CoV-2, predicting humanity will coexist with the virus for the next 10 years. However, he anticipates a 'new normal' emerging by summer 2021.

Living Alongside SARS-CoV-2 for the Next Decade

BioNTech, a leading German biotechnology firm, partnered with Pfizer to develop an effective SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. During a December 24, 2020 press conference—as reported by Business Today—CEO Ugur Sahin stated that the coronavirus will remain part of daily life for the next 10 years.

Sahin envisions a 'new normal' by summer 2021, where the virus circulates at manageable levels without the strict lockdowns of 2020. While winter vaccinations may have limited immediate impact on infections, their full effectiveness should be evident by the following winter, enabling countries to avoid major disruptions.

Emerging Variants Raise Key Questions

Addressing the effectiveness of vaccinating 60-70% of the population against future waves, Sahin noted that higher coverage may be needed if mutations occur. A new variant detected in the UK prompted travel bans from over 40 countries, with India imposing strict entry measures. Another distinct strain has also emerged in South Africa.

BioNTech is rigorously testing its vaccine's efficacy against the British strain, with initial results expected in about two weeks. Sahin is confident it will remain effective, as more than 99% of the proteins—over 1,270 amino acids—stay unchanged. If adjustments are required, the vaccine can be adapted swiftly.

Earlier, in late October 2020, the 20A.EU1 variant, believed to originate in Spain during summer travel, spread across Europe with varying impacts—its full risks still under evaluation.
