Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Dubai remains a global leader in technological innovation. Each night, advanced drones sterilize streets across the emirate, with residents witnessing these efficient machines spraying approved disinfectants.
As part of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Dubai reported 611 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 5 deaths at the time. Though far below neighboring Iran, authorities swiftly implemented strict containment. According to local outlet Gulf News, Dubai Municipality launched a novel initiative on March 26, 2020.
Drones have been sterilizing 129 sites and 23 public spaces overnight, integrating into the national disinfection program. Officials describe it as a preventive campaign to "ensure the health and safety of all members of society."
Authorities chose drones for their superior efficiency and speed in large-scale operations, using only government-approved sanitizers. Complementing this, numerous vehicles equipped for spraying and fumigation are also deployed.
Public space disinfection has proven effective elsewhere, including China and notably South Korea. There, amid a COVID-19 outbreak linked to the Sincheonji Church in Daegu, comprehensive sterilization campaigns curbed spread.
Dubai follows Madrid's lead in drone use against COVID-19, though Spain's focused on broadcasting confinement messages via police drones.
