HappyNurse looks at staff and patients, even with high work pressure in care

If you are young and you do not work in healthcare, you may not think about it yet, but we are all confronted with it in the long run:caring for others and the work pressure in healthcare. However, things can also be done differently with the workload and the attention for the patient, HappyNurse has proven in practice, and research has shown. You probably don't need care yet and you are mainly concerned with everything that affects your own life. But as you get older, care will probably play a greater role.

In recent years, for example, I have been increasingly confronted with the healthcare industry because my mother needed a lot of care before we had to say goodbye to her. In addition, my father received a lot of care in recent months. And even though I cannot (yet) describe a distressing situation in my immediate environment, I do feel that the workload is high. And if I already feel that… how will the patient feel?

Why is the workload in healthcare so high?

HappyNurse commissioned research into the workload in healthcare, the impact it has on the nurses themselves and the enthusiasm of nurses in general. Are you or do you know a healthcare professional? Then read on or draw the attention of the other person to this.

Everyone is talking about the high pressure at work these days. Not only employees in the care sector suffer from stress, other professionals also suffer from high work pressure. An aging population, power of insurers, administration… it all leads to extra stress for nurses and a high workload in healthcare.

It can also be different according to HappyNurse

HappyNurse is a national temporary employment and home care organization for the healthcare industry. At HappyNurse they know how to assist healthcare professionals, even with the high workload in healthcare. The enthusiasm of the nurses who work at HappyNurse is therefore significantly higher than that of the professionals who work elsewhere in the healthcare sector (53% versus 23%). This is apparent from a recently conducted research by Wilmar Schaufeli (professor of Work and Organizational Psychology, Utrecht University).

How is that possible?

According to Marijke – founder and owner of HappyNurse – this is actually very simple. Do you want to make sure that the healthcare professional is comfortable in his or her own skin? Then you have to make sure that they get energy from their work instead of it guzzling energy. In principle, this applies to every industry, of course, but this is one of the spearheads of the organization in particular at HappyNurse. Not surprising, because the founder herself also gives a very enthusiastic impression 😉 .

Why Marijke started HappyNurse

Marijke also experienced first-hand that the workload in healthcare is too high. During the time she was in hospital, she experienced that providing good care to patients is related to the happiness that the nurse experiences in his or her profession. Because only happy nurses provide the best care to patients, says Marijke. The opportunity to learn and develop yourself has a positive influence on the feeling of happiness during work.

Because let's be honest… a healthcare professional starts a job in healthcare from a vocation or a passion. Working with – and caring for – others is central to this. And that is precisely what no longer seems to be at the top of the priority list due to the high workload in healthcare.

That could be different, Mary thought. And now she has been proving for 10 years - together with all employees - that this is indeed the case. The outcome of the research is therefore the icing on the cake of their 10th anniversary.

Happyning event on Nursing Day

On the Day of Nursing (12 May), HappyNurse celebrated its 10th anniversary with a Happyning for healthcare professionals. Not just for their own employees, but for all nursing staff. I also took a look. There is quite a bit of 'blue' walking around in a HappyNurse sweater, but there are also many other healthcare professionals on their feet.

The day consists of a short introduction to the research, followed by interesting workshops for which you can register. From more knowledge about dementia to specific bandaging methods and from a workshop about healthy eating patterns during a night shift to learning how to deal with aggression. There is plenty of attention for the learning and development of those present, just as HappyNurse has in mind.

There is also the option of speed dating with HappyNurse employees and franchisers.

And of course there is time for some fun in between… take a picture with your colleagues 😉 .

What contributes to a feeling of happiness?

Aspects of work in care that are experienced as positive, motivating and energizing are:

  • The opportunity to develop yourself in your work
  • Variety of work
  • A good faith in managers and a token of appreciation
  • Small self-managing teams
  • Attention to the patient

Now it is not the case that the workload in healthcare is high at all agencies except HappyNurse, where they also have a high workload. However, the research clearly shows that the negative influence of the high workload in healthcare is much smaller among HappyNurse employees! Then you are doing something right, I would think.

Working at HappyNurse

Are you in healthcare and if you are considering a switch… at HappyNurse they are looking for more than 700 extra healthcare professionals to support the intended growth of the organization. This growth is taking place within the home care part (now 35 district teams), but also within the HappyNurse employment agency (now 19 branches). Here you will find more information.
