The Dutch healthcare system requires a comprehensive overhaul to rein in escalating costs, according to the authoritative Council for Public Health and Society (RVZ).
In the coming years, patient numbers with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and lung disease are projected to surge. This demands more targeted support. Hospitals, general practitioners, and specialists must move beyond autopilot operations to deliver truly necessary care.
Key RVZ recommendations include substantially expanding GP practices by 2020, enabling them to handle minor surgical procedures. Large and regional hospitals should also coordinate care more effectively, unlocking significant cost savings.
The Dutch public must contribute too. The RVZ emphasizes personal responsibility—working proactively on health through quitting smoking, more exercise, and healthier eating.
