The Netherlands boasts a unique culinary landscape that's often met with raised eyebrows from international visitors. While our fries with mayonnaise (famously featured in Pulp Fiction) and raw herring spark confusion, chocolate sprinkles—or hagelslag—on bread top the list of head-scratchers. As a Dutch parent with years of firsthand experience navigating family meals, I've seen this reaction countless times. Stroopwafels and kroketten get nods of approval, but a simple sandwich topped with chocolate sprinkles? That's the real showstopper.

This everyday ritual leaves visitors' eyebrows shooting skyward in disbelief. Many countries have bread-and-topping breakfasts, but associating sprinkles with cake decorations makes our version seem like a kid's treat. Yet, in the Netherlands, it's enjoyed by all ages on fresh bread with butter—a staple I've relished since childhood.
Chocolate hagelslag is my favorite, paired with crusty white bread and a generous butter layer—perfect for breakfast in my younger days. Now, I opt for yogurt and muesli, while my kids enjoy it for lunch. We also love chocolate spread (limited to one slice) and fun animal-shaped flakes. Strict rules keep portions in check: no chocolate spreads to school, ensuring balance amid our chocolate-loving culture.
A recent international study filmed children's reactions to global breakfasts, from coffee to Asian rice porridge and soups. Grimaces abounded, but the Dutch sandwich with golden chocolate sprinkles drew salivating smiles. Kids universally exclaimed, “Chocolate for breakfast? My mom would never!”
That hit home: we're essentially serving chocolate on bread. Admitting to a full chocolate bar for breakfast would draw outrage, yet hagelslag sails under the radar as cherished tradition. Public backlash meets any suggestion to curb intake, masking the sneaky sugar load alongside cookies and bars.
It's time to rethink hagelslag. A total ban feels impossible amid protests, so I'm cutting back and skipping it as default. But that fresh slice beckons, craving those endorphins. Moderation wins: one won't hurt, skipping the evening bar instead. A happy parent models balance, after all. Tomorrow's a fresh start.
