Estimates indicate that 500,000 to 1 million Dutch drivers hold a license but avoid roads due to anxiety. Santé driving instructor shares proven strategies to regain confidence.
Driving anxiety often follows an accident or near-miss, or builds gradually. A common misconception: fearful drivers believe they lack skills—this is a myth, as anxiety disrupts focus, not ability.
Driving anxiety resembles other anxiety disorders and may connect to fears like heights or claustrophobia. Individuals dread accidents, collisions, or speeding, sparking intrusive thoughts. Avoidance intensifies the fear over time.
Psychologists endorse exposure therapy: gradually resume driving. Avoid ruminating on crashes, hitting pedestrians, or losing control, as it spikes adrenaline and tension. Instead, focus on deep breathing, swap negative thoughts with positive memories, play soothing music, or repeat mantras like "I'm calm, everything is fine." More exercises here.
License holders can benefit from ANWB's RijZeker training, offering personalized guidance to conquer fear. It starts with an intake interview to set clear expectations.
