Reluctant to start a weight loss diet? Recent research might back your instincts. A review by two Venezuelan professors analyzed 20 studies on the effects of weight loss on health, finding it often correlates with higher mortality.

Fifteen of the 20 studies showed death rates increased after weight loss. Only five reported a decrease.
A key caveat: Not all weight loss is intentional. It can stem from underlying illnesses. Focusing on the nine studies involving planned weight loss, seven still found elevated death rates, with decreases in just two.

Yo-Yo Dieting Poses Greatest Risks
Experts advise avoiding the yo-yo effect at all costs. Instead of fixating on weight loss, prioritize nutritious eating and regular exercise for better health outcomes.
Counterpoint: Other analyses show neutral effects on mortality post-weight loss, while one study noted benefits only for diabetics.
