Menstrual cramps can disrupt daily life. Sex toy brand Womanizer and menstrual cup maker Lunette explored an unconventional remedy: masturbation. A practicing gynecologist weighs in on its potential effectiveness.
In a three-month study involving 486 women experiencing abdominal cramps, bloating, and breast tenderness, participants skipped painkillers and masturbated regularly instead. Remarkably, 70% reported reduced pain symptoms.
But does 'menstrubation'—as dubbed by Womanizer and Lunette—hold up scientifically? Gynecologist Tom Bovyn, speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws, notes: "A study of 486 people isn't representative enough to claim definitive results." That said, arousal can indeed dull pain. "It distracts from discomfort, and post-orgasm, increased blood flow to the genitals, clitoris, and surrounding areas occurs," Bovyn explains. Orgasms also release endorphins, natural pain-relieving hormones that may ease cramps.
