Expert Q&A: Can You Exercise Safely During Burnout Recovery? Dr. Juriaan Galavazzi Explains

Burnout depletes your energy reserves. Is it wise to start exercising right away, or better to rest until you feel stronger? As a leading physician and coach, Dr. Juriaan Galavazzi shares his evidence-based insights with Santé.

Dr. Juriaan Galavazzi: "When you expend more energy than you replenish over time, burnout signals your body's breaking point. Many double down, thinking perseverance will fix it—but hitting the brakes is essential. Recovery strategies like a two-week vacation, meditation, or gentle yoga help, though standing still feels uncomfortable for most. Full recovery typically takes six months to two years, or longer."

Performance-Oriented Pitfalls

"Exercise during burnout? Absolutely, if it doesn't turn into another high-pressure task. Sports are often goal-driven—targeting a specific run speed or distance. Missing it feels like failure. While achievements fuel growth and validation, depending on them for well-being adds stress. If your usual 5km run now takes 40 minutes instead of 30, celebrate it. Beware the trap: endorphins make you feel invincible, risking overexertion and prolonged burnout, especially among athletes. Direct that post-exercise boost toward true healing."

Opt for Gentle Movement

"Not a sports fan? Choose low-key movement like walking, horse riding, or cycling—avoid high-resistance or demanding team activities. That said, if boxing clears your mind and builds positive connections, it can be therapeutic. Focus on joy and ease. Above all, tune into your body and select what truly energizes you."
