What sound starts your day? Soothing music or a jarring alarm blare? New research reveals which one leaves you feeling more alert.

Lead researcher Stuart McFarlane notes: "You might expect a loud alarm to boost morning alertness, but surprisingly, melodies help you rise feeling less groggy."
McFarlane explains that starting the day sleep-deprived impairs performance for up to 4 hours. This is critical for shift workers in high-stakes roles like firefighters, paramedics, and pilots, where sleep inertia raises accident risks.
