Life Expectancy Trends: Slower Gains for 65-Year-Olds in 2023

Recent data reveals that life expectancy is increasing more slowly than previously anticipated.

If you're reaching age 65 in 2023, expect an average of 20.48 more years of life from that point—slightly less than the 20.74 years forecasted last year, according to official statistics from Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

Why the adjustment?
Higher-than-expected mortality occurred in the last four months of 2016 and the first eight months of 2017. Learn how CBS calculates life expectancy.

Today's life expectancy for 65-year-olds exceeds that of 1956 by more than five years. Back then, only 9% reached 90; today, it's 31%.
