Does Binge-Watching Harm Your Sleep Quality? Insights from University Research

Research indicates it just might.

The University of Leuven surveyed 423 young adults aged 18 to 25 about their series-watching habits and sleep quality.

Binge-watching: Watching multiple episodes of the same series in succession.

The Numbers
Eight in ten binge-watch regularly, with 20% doing so several times a week. One in three binge-watchers sleeps worse than peers who don't marathon episodes.

Why the Insomnia? Cliffhangers at episode ends make it hard to stop, even when bedtime calls. The issue isn't fewer sleep hours—it's poorer sleep quality among binge-watchers.

Practical Advice
Scale back on binge sessions. Or, after your marathon, unwind for at least 30 minutes before lights out.
