As summer approaches and swimwear season looms, many are motivated to shed those extra kilos. Norwegian researchers suggest this effort could soon translate to cheaper plane tickets.
Researcher Bharat P. Bhatta from Norway argues that pricing airline tickets based on weight makes perfect sense. Heavier loads mean higher fuel consumption, increased CO₂ emissions, and elevated costs for airlines.
Three Pricing Proposals
Bhatta outlines three practical models to implement weight-based pricing:
1. Total Weight
The ticket price is calculated based on the combined weight of the passenger and their luggage.
2. Base Rate
A standard base fare applies, with surcharges for those exceeding a set weight threshold and discounts for lighter passengers.
3. Average Weight
Fares are set for average-weight travelers, with adjustments if luggage pushes the total beyond limits.
Which option do you think is best: 1, 2, or 3?
