PIP Breast Implants Update: Safety Research and Removal Recommendations

Recent studies, including a large-scale National Health Service (NHS) survey, confirm that Poly Implant Prothèse (PIP) breast implants are non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, and pose no long-term health risks.

Research Background
PIP implants drew global attention after French regulators identified the use of an unapproved silicone gel in manufacturing. While this gel is now considered non-dangerous, PIP implants carry roughly twice the leakage risk of standard devices.

Impact on Wearers
In January, the Dutch Health Care Inspectorate (IGZ) and Netherlands Association of Plastic Surgeons (NVPC) recommended removal for about 1,400 affected women in the Netherlands. Worldwide, approximately 400,000 women have PIP implants.
